Today is Sunday, December 6, the day of the fall of dictatorship and the liberation of democracy. On this day in 1990, the then dictator Hussein Muhammad Ershad resigned in the face of mass movement. Ershad’s Jatiya Party observed December 6 as ‘Constitution Preservation Day’. Different political parties and socio-cultural organizations celebrate the day through various programs.
On 24 March 1982, the then Chief of Army Staff Ershad seized power by imposing martial law. He handed over power to a non-partisan caretaker government on December 6, 1990. Ershad was forced to relinquish power on 6 December 1990 due to the relentless program of the Awami League and BNP-led alliance.
On that day, the then President Hussein Muhammad Ershad was forced to hand over power to a non-partisan and neutral caretaker government as per the outline of the three alliances. Those who lost their lives in this movement are- Nur Hossain, Selim, Delwar, Tajul, Dr. Milon, Nurul Huda, Babul, Fattah and many more.
